High investment in more space

Dubai’s exhibition and meetings business is flourishing; new space is therefore needed to accommodate expanding events and newcomers. Consequently, the powers that be in the emirate are investing heavily in further development of this important branch of industry, subjecting not only the Dubai World Trade Centre (WTC) to extension and massive alteration. The Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC) is also being enlarged, following a decision taken at the end of last year by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. In the coming seven to ten years around EUR 3.6 billion is to be spent on upgrading the WTC complex, to which hotels, a convention centre, residential and office buildings, and shopping malls are to be added.Construction work began already in February on a new exhibition hall adding 15.000 m2 to the DICEC. That means 30% more space for the exhibition centre. Together the two congress and exhibition facilities known as Dubai Exhibitions City will feature an area of roughly 120.000 m2 when the first construction stage is completed in 2009. Dubai is looking to dominate business in the Gulf region.
