VDW cannot resist AMB

Metav in Munich has come to the end of the line. It took place early April for the second and last time.

It was not destined to enjoy a long life. After its second (successful) edition, the VDW German machine tool industry took Metav off the Munich exhibition agenda and from 2008 will endorse the AMB International Exhibition for Metalworking in Stuttgart. Agreement on this was reached mid-March between the exhibition company Stuttgarter Messe- und Kongressgesellschaft (SMK) and the Frankfurt-based association - to the great regret of the Messe München International (MMI) group. On the association's initiative Messe München played a committed part for two years in establishing and developing Metav in Munich, making a "major contribution" to its particularly successful progress - success that the VDW expressly acknowledges.
The association, which has organised trade fairs for the industry for 85 years, EMO Hanover since 1997 and Metav Düsseldorf since 1980, mustered its forces 2004 in the Bavarian state capital with the clear intention of having Metav München serve the southern German region and neighbouring foreign markets as a counterpart to Metav Düsseldorf, which was not up for grabs. It would, the VDW maintained, "provide an attractive alternative to the existing fairs in this region" - and lead in the medium term to consolidation of the metalworking exhibition landscape in Germany. Fameta, staged in Nuremberg by P.E.Schall, Frickenhausen, capitulated before the run on Metav München 2004: it was cancelled and disappeared from the market.
Metav München made a vertical take-off in 2004 with 530 exhibitors, bookings for net stand space of 22,500 m2 and 23,000 professional visitors. The second (and final) edition from April 4 to 7 even bettered this performance.
Even so: "Surprisingly quick completion of Stuttgart's new exhibition centre is dramatically altering the tradeshow landscape in the south of Germany," says Detlev Elsinghorst, chairman of the METAV Committee, by way of explanation for the decision to give up the fair. "The market is indicating to us that companies are now clearly tending towards Stuttgart." This is why the VDW's board is also setting its sights in that direction. At the beginning of April the exhibition company in Munich announced a new fair. Named "metall München - European Trade Fair for Metalworking in Industry and the Skilled Trades", to be launched from March 7 to 10, 2007 by GHM, which organises crafts fairs. It is planned to stage metall München in odd years - those in which the international leader fair EMO takes place .
